Brooks Helps Families Get to Disney World

Cara Brooks recently completed her summer internship with Bert’s Big Adventure, a nonprofit organization that provides a trip to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families.

Cara Brooks is a senior mass communications major with a minor in management. This past summer, Cara completed her internship with Bert’s Big Adventure, a small nonprofit based in Atlanta, Ga. “As an intern, I was responsible for a wide variety of communication-related tasks which include social media management, writing and editing, event planning and design,” Brooks said. “My main assignment was writing and editing copy for the organization’s annual Bert’s Big Adventure magazine. I also played a large part in working with our graphic designers for the magazine which was such a fun process; I have even been able to design a few conceptual magazine spreads in my personal Adobe Suite!”

Cara Brooks working on Bert's Big Adventure magazine.Bert’s Big Adventure is a nonprofit organization that provides an all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. “Along with working on the magazine, I was given the chance to write and edit blog posts for the Bert’s Big Adventure website, communicate with donors and sponsors of the organization, create and curate social media content and practice event planning skills.”

Finishing this internship fulfilled Brooks’ mass communications internship requirement and gave her some insight on what she wants to do after graduation. “I love writing and editing and have thoroughly enjoyed my work on the magazine. I have also loved communicating with sponsors and event planning; I could see myself using any of these skills in the future,” Brooks said. “I am torn between writing and editing content for a magazine or stepping into a communications office at a business. Though I’m open to either, my dream job would probably be working for a magazine because I feel as if my design experience is a strength for working in a magazine setting. Editors have to know design almost as much as the graphic designers do!”
